The Turducken

posted in Inspiration |

We have a local health food supermarket, New Seasons Market where we do most of our shopping. They have special organic and free range meats for the holidays. I noticed something called a turducken on the list of options over a year ago, but they were sold out. I was curious, just what was this turkey-duck-chicken thing?

It was expensive for a turkey at $4.99 a pound. Next holiday, it was sold out again. Which made me wonder more. Just what made this thing worth so much, and why did so many people want them? So this year, I got online and ordered one early before they sold out.

Just before Christmas we went to pick it up, not really knowing what we were getting. We had a number of interesting discussions around just how did they get a chicken inside a duck inside a turkey? We asked our friends and family. No one knew, but there was curiosity. And we had to promise to tell the story of what we discovered. So here it is, our nine hour day in a two and a half minute video. (It’s the first one we’ve done on Camtasia, so we still need to learn about getting good audio. There is also the part where the cat is biting the microphone….)

Wow, the shots at the end (taken post-meal?) where it’s cooler, and where you’re targeting more of the ‘center’ of the turducken really look great — the sections are clearer, and it looks less obviously assembled.

With a meat “unit” that has no bones, how are the winglets attached? It certainly is … an odd bird. :)

Yea, the wings kind of got me too. But apparently, having gone on Paul Prudhomme’s authoritative turducken web page, it could have had legs also. And three kinds of stuffing. All of which add up to something like 1600 calories per serving. During the long cooking phase I was surfing the web to get a better idea of what we had gotten into, and found all sorts of 48 hours process for preparing a turducken from the raw turkeys, ducks and chickens from the deboning process forward. I felt grateful to have hunk-o-meat with wings.

i had to watch.  i couldn’t resist a clip where your cat bites the microphone.  was she trying to get some tdkn?  i have to say the wings looked out of place.  were they to serve as a reminder that this was once a bird?  how did it taste?

it was nice to hear your voice from afar.  merry christmas and happy new year!

I have no idea what she found appealing about the microphone, but she succeeded that once, and is now over it. Which is a relief since it’s hard to concentrate on what you are saying in sync with the images with a cat literally trying to bite something attached to your face. We decided it was better than plain old turkey. I wasn’t as fond of the duck, my husband wanted legs. But that was the beauty of the thing, we all found parts we liked.

Miss you! Can’t wait to hear tales from afar……
